MEANING OF LOW POROSITY HAIR

Low porosity hair refers to hair strands that have a tightly bound cuticle layer, making it difficult for moisture or water to penetrate the hair shaft. Understanding low porosity hair is crucial for proper hair care routines and selecting the right products. Here’s everything you need to know:

CHARACTERISTICS OF LOW POROSITY HAIR

1. Tightly Closed Cuticles: The outer layer of the hair (cuticle) lies flat and tightly packed, making it resistant to outside elements.
2. Difficulty Absorbing Moisture: Low porosity hair tends to repel water or product buildup, making it difficult for moisture to penetrate.
3. Product Buildup Prone: Hair products may sit on the hair rather than being absorbed, leading to buildup.
4. Slow to Dry: Since moisture has difficulty entering, hair might take longer to dry after washing.

CARE TIPS FOR LOW POROSITY HAIR

1. Use Heat: Applying heat, like warm water or a heat cap, can help open the cuticle slightly, allowing products to penetrate.
2. Clarify Regularly: Use clarifying shampoos to remove product buildup that accumulates due to the hair’s resistance to absorbing products.
3. Avoid Heavy Products: Only use those specifically-designed products for this type of hair.
4. Avoid Protein Overload: Low porosity hair might be prone to protein buildup, so be cautious with protein-heavy treatments.
5. Use Steam: Steaming can aid in hydration by opening the hair cuticles.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS

1. Clarifying Shampoos: Remove product buildup without drying out the hair.
2. Lightweight Conditioners: Only use conditioners that won’t weigh down the hair.
3. Humectants: Products containing glycerin or aloe vera to attract moisture to the hair.
4. Liquid-Based Styling Products: Apply Spritzes, mists, or liquid-based styling products that can be easily absorbed.

RECOMMENDED HAIR CARE ROUTINE

1. Clarify: Use a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup.
2. Apply Products on Damp Hair: Water helps open the cuticle, making it easier for products to be absorbed.
3. Use Heat: Incorporate heat to aid in product penetration during treatments.
4. Moisturize Regularly: Keep your hair hydrated with lightweight, natural products.
5. Protective Styling: Minimize damage and moisture loss by styling hair in protective styles.

Understanding your hair’s porosity helps in tailoring a hair care routine that effectively nourishes and maintains healthy, moisturized hair. Experimenting with various products and techniques will help identify what works best for your hair type.
